Dorothy Poole and I did my Lapland/Laconia Owl monitoring route this evenin=
g. A perfect night with clear skies, no wind, sound carrying for miles and=
bright enough that I did not have to turn the flashlight on for to start t=
he playback. There were tons of spring peepers as normal. Wood frog activ=
ity was extremely low compared to other years on this route. We had six ba=
rred owls. On stop number two a barred owl came out right away and gave us=
a great display of calling and staying in the open. Other interesting sig=
htings were of a ruffed grouse drumming, at least two American woodcocks. =
A possible two others at two other stops, but not conclusive. We also saw =
a rat running down the road and a snowshoe hare. Oh yes, I can't forget th=
e many common loons calling with their tremolos. A great evening to be out=
 and about enjoying nature.
