Today, while walking a forest road north of Kingston, N.S. I encountered my first butterfly of the season. At first I missed it and then when I came back to the same spot, it was there and I was able to get some images of it open wings. At first glance it looked like a Painted Lady but on close examination of the images, it was not in the N.A. Butterfly book by Kaufmann... except it looked like the Small Tortoiseshell. A search of the internet gave me a picture most like it and it was a Large Tortoiseshell.
Is this unusual or have others seen this butterfly here?

I have put the pictures up on e-butterfly.org.

Regards,
Larry
