I really like birding that Sandy Desert Rd as well. I like going on weekend=
s or holidays because there are not any trucks and you can go into the grav=
el pit to see the Bank Swallow colony as well as Spotted Sandpiper and Kill=
deer there. 4 bittern is nice! I had 1 one there before.

I hadn't been to Hardwood Lands for a long time and decided to visit it tod=
ay. The roads are all dirt but they have been graded smooth. They also ha=
ve watered the main road in to keep down the dust. Truck traffic was infre=
quent and they passed by at a slow speed.

The best birds were 4 American Bitterns that rose from the marsh just befor=
e the main Shaw plant. They circled around and disappeared again into the =
marsh. Not many birds were seen in the foliage but they were singing every=
where. Several warbler species were heard (including Mourning, Black-throa=
ted Green, Black-and-white, Yellow, Cape May, Common Yellowthroats, Ovenbir=
ds, Northern Parula, American Redstart) as well as Alder Flycatchers and bo=
th common vireos. A Pileated was the only woodpecker.

I had a very pleasant time driving around slowly in my blind (car) and enjo=
ying the sunny day.

Don
