Hi again,

I thought I would give you some biographical information on our guest
speaker, Donna Crossland, not only because she will be our inaugural speaker
at the first southwest meeting of the Bird Society but also since she is a
regular contributor to this group. It certainly was interesting for me to
learn more about her.

Donna grew up on a tiny farm located among the forests of the interior of
Kings County, NS. Daughter of a horse logger, she became a naturalist, and
later a biologist. A strong devotion for protecting natural resources began
through a career as a Park Warden for Parks Canada. Deep curiosity regarding
the inherent characteristics of Acadian forests of the Maritimes led to
researching 'historical forest ecology'; defining our forests at the time of
early European settlement, and eventually culminating to a Master's of
Science in Forestry (UNB). In 2009-10, she volunteered on the Natural
Resources Strategy 'Forest Panel of Expertise' with Bob Bancroft to produce
science-based recommendations for managing forests in an ecologically
sustainable manner. Donna is currently on the Executive Board of the Medway
Community Forest Coop, Vice President of Nature Nova Scotia, and employed as
Resource Management Officer at Kejimkujik. Key passions are monitoring
forest songbirds, talking with owls, and harmonizing to "Home on the Range"
with a very gifted German shepherd.
