On the logical difficulty mentioned about genetic contamination being unlik=
ely, this was wrong because it=92s not occurring in the south-bound October=
 migration.

Contamination is actually likely on the way north in the three or so genera=
tions it takes to get the monarchs out of Mexico via USA up into the north =
east. Well-intentioned people have been mass rearing commercial monarchs a=
nd then releasing them into populations migrating north at the start of the=
season: interbreeding of the commercial non-migrators with the wild migra=
tory stock is then entirely possible. This may damage overall migratory ab=
ility, may also have introduced parasites into the wild populations (as hap=
pened with bumblebees reared en masse commercially as pollinators), and is =
generally unhelpful for several reasons.

To read about the several perils of mass release of commercially derived mo=
narchs, there=92s an authoritative and salutary Journey North account by 10=
monarch specialists, =93Captive breeding and releasing monarchs=94 (2015).=
It=92s reference 20 of the Tenger-Trolander paper but is available as a P=
DF file so you don=92t need special access to read it:

https://journeynorth.org/tm/monarch/conservation_action_release.pdf

It supports small-scale breeding of commercial monarchs in schools etc for =
educational/social purposes, but not mass breeding/wild release.
