Well, Paul, I haven't seen a Red Squirrel taunting an owl, but I once had one behaving in the same way towards my cat.

Abby was a slow-moving ginger tabby who loved to sniff all the way up a blade of grass and then move on to the next one - the picture of contentment. One day she was outside with me, lying in the shade beneath a tree while I worked nearby in my garden. A squirrel began chattering at her from the tree, and running at her up and down the trunk. This went on for several minutes, with the cat blinking sleepily but not otherwise moving. Eventually, as if to try to get a rise out of her, the squirrel jumped off the tree right in front of her.

Abby barely had to move to catch it - it was as if she just opened her jaws and the squirrel jumped into them. That was one squirrel that learned its lesson too late to pass the information on to future generations.

Perhaps the squirrels do this taunting of predators to learn about their behaviour, or perhaps their cheeky nature just gets the better of them. Either way, it does seem bizarre!

Cheers,
Susann
