Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans

This is the home page of the Halifax chapter of CUUPS.

What is CUUPS?

CUUPS is a group of people who are interested in earth-centred spirituality. We are affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Church. Some CUUPS members are also UU members, some are not. The Halifax Chapter is unofficial -- we are not (yet) formally affiliated with the North American CUUPS organization. Our purpose is to investigate and learn from Earth Centred Religions (such as Goddess spirituality, Asatru, and Wicca) and seek for ways of expressing our spirituality.

We do this through holding meetings that may be workshops, discussion groups, or rituals commemorating the moons and seasons of the year. Workshops and discussion groups are open to anyone interested. Ritual meetings are open to anyone prepared to participate.

Last year we met to celebrate each full moon, running these meetings as "teaching circles", so that new participants could learn the basis of constructing earth-based ritual. At present we're holding a series of workshops on topics of interests to pagans, and we're always on the lookout for people who wish to share their ideas, methods and knowledge, and those who wish simply to come along and learn.

When is the next meeting?

The next meeting is on Friday May 23 when we will have a workshop on Herbs and their uses Meetings are held on the third Friday of each month, with a guest speaker. (Note: this meeting is on the fourth Friday.)

Time 7:30 p.m. All are welcome! Contact MJ at the address below for details!

If you are interested in contacting us, please email [citywich@mag1.magmacom.com], or leave a message at the UU church.

Notes on some previous meetings

This year we have held workshops on Tarot and other divination tools, and on Astrology -- fascinating, and participants (ages ranging from 6 to 60+) learned a lot, and shared their knowledge.

Last year we held meetings on or near each full moon. Some of these deserve a special mention:

Imbolc at Marion's house was a joyful celebration of the return of light after the dark of winter... It included much discussion of the concept of Imbolc, and the Irish goddess Brigid.

At our meeting on Friday May 3 we celebrated the festival of Beltane, which in the Celtic year cycle marks the start of the summer half-year. We danced round a maypole, braiding our ribbons into the year's Fate. We also conducted a tree ritual, and later had a fine drumming session.

There were two full moons in June, and each was celebrated. Sometimes people call the second full moon in a calendar month a "blue moon". Does it have special significance? Accounts differ, but our second June celebration was notable...
