Previews

1. Manitoba (25-8) -- beat Regina in games 2 and 3 of the GPAC final to
gain the automatic bid to the nationals. They did it the hard way, losing
the last two games of the regular season at home to Regina, and had to go
on the road in the finals. Did not make the finals last year, as Regina
went as the automatic bid, and Western as the wild card.
4-5 vs. other teams here at the Nationals. They are 3-5 vs.
Regina should they meet in the finals. On November 9th, they beat UVic by
4 for their only other encounter vs. finalists. They had won 13 in a row
at one point during the season until they got into the "meat" of their
schedule.
2. Victoria (28-3) -- arguably the hottest team in the country right now.
They've won 17 in a row, and 21 of 22. They swept through the playoffs
disposing UBC and Calgary in 4 straight. Their three losses this year
came to Calgary (17-14) by 1, UBC (13-15) by 4, and to Manitoba (25-8) by
4. That's right -- the team hasn't lost by more than 4 points all year.
Their only game vs. fellow Nationals was the loss to Manitoba on
November 9th. They did beat U of T who didn't make it. Only three teams
have scored more than 70 points on UVic, and they lost 2 of those games.
In eight games, this team held the opposition below 40 points, including
Alberta (21-13) in a 57-39 win.
3. Regina (27-8) -- defending national champion needed a wave of the wild
card wand to get in. After beating Manitoba in two straight to end the
season and clinch home court advantage, they were upset by the same team
in the playoffs.
5-3 vs. Manitoba (25-8) this year. They split with Western
Ontario (28-5), winning by 8, and losing by 13. They took 3 from Lakehead
(21-10) earlier in the year -- all double digit wins. On October 24th,
very early in the season, they beat Concordia (20-10) by 3. That's a
combined 10-4 vs. other teams at the championships.
4. Laurentian (27-5) -- the other team that could argue for being the
hottest around. After an easy 29 point win in the first round of the
Ontario finals vs. Guelph (14-15), Laurentian clinched a National berth by
beating Queen's (24-11) by 14. In front of a home crowd, they then nipped
Western (28-5) by 4 at the wire to take the Ontario title. They have won
22 out of their last 23 games, the lone loss coming to U of T
vs. Western this season they are 1-1, the other game was a 2
points loss back in October. They are 0-2 vs. Lakehead, and 2-0 vs.
Concordia. Combined 3-3 vs. other teams.
5. Western Ontario (28-5) - clinched an inviatation when they beat U of T
(26-7) by 9 points in the Ontario semi-finals. They finished first in the
OUA West. They've already seen several of their fellow finalists. They
are 1-1 against Lakehead this year, and both of those were in Lakehead.
They are 1-1 vs. Laurentian, with a 2 point win, and a 4 point loss. They
are also 1-1 vs. Regina this year, a 13 point win and an 8 point loss. At
one point during the season, Western had won 22 of 23 games -- their only
loss to Regina. If their opponent scores over 68 points, Western are 2-5.
They are 23-0 otherwise.
6. Concordia (20-10) - the Quebec conference champion. They beat Laval
(14-18) to get their automatic bid. They have already beaten Lakehead by

On October 24th, they dropped a 3 point decision to Regina. That makes 1-3
vs. fellow competitors.
7. Prince Edward Island (26-7) beat Cape Breton (3-20), UNB (15-12) and
finally Memorial (20-7) to gain the Atlantic Conference berth. The middle
game vs. UNB was decided by 2 points. Their experience vs. other teams in
the tournament is limited at best. On January 3rd, they lost to Lakehead
by 12.
8. Lakehead (21-10) - gained entry as the host, and appear to be a
stronger entry than last year's team. Lost to Queen's (24-11), and beat
Guelph (14-15) and McMaster (16-11) in the Ontario tournament. Vs. other
competitors: 0-1 vs. Concordia, a loss by 6 points -- 2-0 vs. Laurentian,
by a total of 6 points -- 1-0 vs. Prince Edward Island -- 0-3 vs. Regina
-- 1-1 vs. Western. Lakehead has previously seen 5 of the 7 other teams,
but not their first round opponent.
