National Awards 1998

Liz Hoffman Player of the Year award
DEB CUTHBERT, Toronto Varsity Blues
This third-year Physical Education and Health student from Guelph, Ont., was the OUA Rookie of the Year in 1996 and a second team All-Star. In 1997, she was selected as a first-team All-Star and the OUA Most Valuable Player. The OUA second-leading scorer last year was able to repeat her outstanding offensive performance this year, scoring 12 goals. Deb is a member of the Varsity Blues’ offensive penalty-corner unit and a vital part of both their attack and defence. A member of Canada’s junior national training squad since 1993 and selected to attend national training camps from 1994 to 1996, Cuthbert was a member of Team Canada at the 1997 Junior World Cup in Korea.

Joyce Slipp Rookie of the Year jewel
ERIN FRASER, Toronto Varsity Blues
In her first season with the Varsity Blues, the native of Kanata, Ont., has already made a major impact on her team and the conference. A strong attacker, Erin faces each game with gutsy determination and strong spirit. Her speed, combined with excellent stickwork, has made her one of the conference’s top scorers. She is able to enter the circle at top speed and then dazzle the goaltender before popping the ball in the net. Playing the midfield has also given Erin the opportunity to display her superior defensive capabilities. Her manner is that of a seasoned veteran.

Gail Wilson Outstanding Contributor Award
JOLENE BOURGEOIS, New Brunswick Varsity Reds
A fourth-year student-athlete and Academic All-Canadian, Jolene was a CIAU All-Canadian in 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98 and 1998-99. In her second year as co-captain for the Varsity Reds, she is currently in the top three of the AUAA’s scoring leaders and is arguably one of the best passers and defenders in the CIAU. Jolene is the backbone of both the offensive and defensive corner units for the Varsity Reds. A math major, Jolene is currently working towards her Society of Actuarial designation, as well as working on her undergraduate degree. She consistenly goes out of her way to ensure that her teammates are taken care of — her first priority is “what can I do for others?” She is a tremendous ambassador for the sport of field hockey in the Maritimes, whether umpiring, coaching at clinics or playing provincially.

Coach-of-the-Year
HASH KANJEE, British Columbia Thunderbirds
This is Kanjee’s sixth season with the Thunderbirds and in that time he has had five previous appearances at the national championship tournament. In 1995-96, he lead UBC to its best finish yet and a silver medal. Hash will be looking for gold this year as his team heads into the tournament with a 8-2-2 record. A graduate of the University of Alberta, Hash played for the Canadian men’s field hockey team from 1976 to 1982 and is presently the president of the Field Hockey Coaches’ Association.
