Technicolour Dreamboots, socks in double-knitting

Technicolour Dreamboots, socks in double-knitting BRRRR... Cold feet! Need is a powerful design motivator. I craved some very warm, tough socks to wear around the house, and having been dabbling with double knitting (two fabrics at once) recently, the idea that the space between the 2 fabrics could be stuffed as insulation occurred to me. I used Socka 4ply yarn, as I had some on hand. It is very tough, warm, machine washable and comes in lovely colours.

I decided to double-knit the entire sock, just for fun, but I have to confess it is exceedingly slow. I had 144 sts in each round, and between each stitch the yarns have to be switched from the back to the front fabric (rather as you were doing a 1 x 1 rib). I stuffed the pockets at the top of the sock for ease of getting on and off and then stuffed no more until I reached the sole. The sole is series of tubes, each stuffed with unspun yarn before closing the tube.

They are effectively 2 pairs of socks in one, with extra insulation and completely reversible, and required about as much work as it would take to knit 3 pairs!
