Hi Will,

I just subbed to alt.fan.letterman just now (I use PINE for
newsreading) and everything worked fine. CCN stopped 'officially'
supporting TIN many years ago, due to various security holes and glitches
in the program. It was brought back (unofficially), as an 'as-is'
alternative to PINE newsreading, when several users requested it. As to
why you're getting that reaction from that one newsgroup, brings up only
one thing I can think of that has occured, occasionally, over the years.

Do you 'c'lean up the newsgroup each time you're done with it or do you
just pop in, read the articles that appeal to you and then just leave,
with numerous articles unread? There is a 'thread-line' that keeps track
of all of the unread articles and when this particular thread-line gets
too long and fractured, due to too many individual articles being unread,
TIN will start to choke on the thread-line list. PINE loads only what is
current and what it needs; TIN loads eveything and sometimes chokes on all
the data.

If you leave unread articles in the group, try this: the next time you
are ready to leave the group, use 'c' (lower case c) for 'cleanup unread
articles' and see if that fixes the problem, the next time you restart
TIN, as it will then load a new abbreviated thread-line for that group.
Cleanup should be done to all groups when you're done with them to keep
the thread-lines from becoming unwieldly long and fractured. If you
cleanup regularly when you finish each group, and that's not the problem,
then it's anyone's guess as to why it's happening, and one reason why we
no longer officially support the TIN newsreader.

If it was a problem at Dal News, PINE would also be affected, which it
isn't.
