---------- From: "Ivo Skoric" <ivo@reporters.net> To: pnbalkans@igc.org Subject: Accomplishments Date: Sat, Apr 3, 1999, 4:31 AM Besides the burning Yugoslav and Serbian police headquarters, which make good TV, and which make happy anybody who was ever oppressed by that force, this is a list of NATO accomplishments so far: * 1/3 of Kosovo Albanians cleansed - reducing their presence from 90% to 60% * unmanageable refugee crisis in Macedonia * return of the Russian fleet to Mediteranean * Montenegro and Vojvodina pledge back their loyalty to Serbia - all talks about independence ceased * wreck of crashed F117 shipped to Russia * more than 100 cruise missiles ($750,000 each) spent; total cost of operation in hudreds of millions dollars * KLA all but eradicated * freedom of assembly curtailed in many European cities fearing violent clashes between Serbian and Albanian protesters * deep frictions between NATO allies: Greece opposes the strikes, Germany and Italy are divided 50:50 on the issue * Germans are furious that they will have to take back all those Albanians that they just recently deported back to Yugoslavia * the U.S. is running out of cruise missiles - Yugoslavia is not running out of mortar shells * Belgrade citizens voluntarily stand as human shields on Belgrade bridges to prevent NATO of destroying them (hmmm, I don't know if that would have worked in Bosnia - with Bosnians standing on bridges while Serb or Croat artillery were doing the shelling) * survived Albanian political leaders (Ibrahim Rugova) ready to talk peace with Milosevic * Milosevic prepares to declare victory (over NATO), sign a deal with Rugova and cease fire (as soon as he drops the number of Albanians in Kosovo to about 30% of population, which is due by the end of the week given the current course of action) * three American servicemen await trial in Belgrade (sarcastic as ever, Milosevic is geared to orchestrate an American style monster process, so right now the authorities are [sloooowly] "gathering evidence") ivo
