Things around Kosovo are not as simple as David Morgan of VANA put it to the Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun, PM Chretien, Lloyd Axworthy and the NDP: "Veterans Against Nuclear Arms is shocked at the Government of Canada's support for the NATO air attacks launched against Serbia on Wednesday, March 24, 1999. These attacks were made without any authorization from the Security Council of the United Nations Organization." Deeply rooted in the UN charter is also the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which has been violated in Kosovo. -- Not to help these humans in need would violate the UN charter too. The question is which of the two of UN charter demands are stronger? To quote only one of them is equivalent to stating a half truth, and that can be interpreted as a biased view. I must give credit to Noam Chomski who, in a recent internet post, looked at both sides of the coin. The UNO was founded by nations, and thus by design it is unlikely to touch sovereign nations no matter how severe their "internal criminal actions" are. In my opinion nations are social entities that can and ought to change their structure in such a way as to deliver fairness to the largest number of citizens. National sovereignty ought to be respected to a degree, but, it is not an absolute. Unfortunately, the United Nations Organization does not have the mandate or the strength to enforce human rights on a global scale. The UNO is in desparate need of reform. It needs an expanded mandate and a rapid deployment force before it can guarantee the security of nations and of subnational groups as well. Only then can we in good consience condemn wholeheartedly the illegal actions by self-appointed world police like the US or NATO.
