Levins, a Harvard Professor, is a particularly distinguished scholar. Subject: Re: Noam Chomsky's comments on the bombing. From: Richard Levins <humaneco@hsph.harvard.edu> The increasing--not only reliance but even preference-- for the use of force by the US in international affairs can be examined on a case by case basis. But if we step back and squint, what we see is a classic situation of a declining economic power(relative to Europe and Japan, and despite the current crisis in JApan) with a first rate military. The overwhelming temptation is to find ways of turning that military power into economic power. (The Assyrians did this when agricutural yields were declining due to salinization and regional drought but they had iron chariots.) This makes the US a clear and present danger to world security for the long run, regardless of the particular excuses for interventions. The competition with Germany over the carving up of Yugoslavia is secondary to establishing the principle of unchecked intervention.
