This is legislation we should support. Colin, should people sign up to
speak in favor of this bill at law amendments committee? In what ways
could the bill be improved? What are its strengths?.

   Legislation key

   Dear Editor:

The design and adoption of the Protected Areas Strategy and Action
Plan by the government of Nova Scotia is commendable. The conservation
commitment of nearly 300,000 hectares of land to maintain ecosystem
integrity, natural processes and biodiversity is of critical
importance. However, in the three years since the development of the
strategy, a critical action priority has not yet been fulfilled - the
wilderness areas require legislation to guarantee their formal
   protection.

With each delay in action, the protection of wilderness in Nova Scotia
is weakened and may be jeopardized. Appropriate legislation, which
captures the public will for wilderness preservation, must be passed
   immediately.

The protected areas strategy is built upon an extensive public review
that generated over 2,000 submissions in overwhelming support of
wilderness preservation. To maintain credibility in the eyes of Nova
Scotians, the government must bring forward a motion to pass the
Wilderness Areas Protection Act and fulfil its obligation to the
   people.

Allowing the present situation to continue, with candidate wilderness
areas protected only in principle, invites further conflict to arise.
The wilderness areas strategy requires immediate legislation for the
Department of the Environment to implement the strategy.
