ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PRINT, SIGN AND SEND A LETTER

About two months ago we sent you an urgent alert about the campaign to
extend the moratorium on oil and gas exploration and development on Georges
Bank, off our Atlantic Coast. The Review Panel charged with considering
this issue, after hearing many submissions, has just recently released its
report. It strongly recommended that the moratorium be extended. This is an
excellent "victory". However, our work is far from over. The Federal and
Nova Scotia governments have yet to make the ultimate decision about the
moratorium. The current moratorium is due to expire at the end of this year
unless these governments follow the advice of the Panel and extend it. We
need to communicate NOW to these governments that Canadians who care want
this extension.

Below is a letter we urge you to send to one or more of the Federal and Nova
Scotia government contacts we've enclosed. We particularly need letters to
Ottawa. Please take a few moments and print, sign and send. Faxing is the
easiest method. All you need to do is indicate the Minister who will
recieve it on a fax cover page. It will only take a moment but would be
sure to make a difference.

Thank You.

To the Minister

We urge you to extend the moratorium on oil and gas development on George's Bank
until at least 2012. We urge you to follow the recommendations of the
George's Bank
Review Panel. In its recently released report, the Panel made it clear that
the moratorium should be extended long enough to ensure the safety and
health of this important area.

The Panel indicated that protection of this "area of exceptional ecological
value" is the "highest priority". The Panel noted that in addition to the
ecological and biodiversity importance of the area, the George's Bank
fishery is of "very great economic, social, and cultural significance to
southwest Nova Scotia". The report concluded that oil and gas development
and production could have significant
impacts on Georges, and that "it would be inappropriate to permit the associated
risks".

The panel summed up the issue in a most significant way: "arguments that
point to the
great value of George's Bank, ecologically and as a fishery, weighed against
a lack
of public need for and limited benefits from petroleum exploration are
persuasive."

These are strong statements and were made after reviewing and assessing the
dozens of
often in-depth and highly technical submissions to the Panel. It is
incumbent upon you to seriously consider the recommendations and the manner
in which they were developeed. The moratorium should be extended at least
until 2012, without chance of revocation, in order to match the American
moratorium. A review process similar to that recently undertaken by the
Panel should be completed before 2012 to determine whether the new
moratorium should be extended again. Please act accordingly and preserve
this vital part of Canada's heritage and the global ecosystem.

Sincerely,
