>From what i hear from scientists who "should know", the bullets made
out of Depleted Uranium which sit at the bottom of Halifax Harbour's
approaches do not present much of a health hazard to anything except
barnacles that have the misfortune to be living on them, or
invertebrates in areas where they are concentrated, to a minor degree:
the danger to human health is fortunately minimal, since a) the total
amount used was not large, b) no more (that we the public are being
told about, ie!) is being added, and c) the residual radiation in
lobsters and the like in the area due to the bullets ("rounds") is
calculated to be very minor, and bottom-dwelling fish are not even
harvested there, so unless you eat a LOT of Halifax-area lobster, do
not worry about it. Granted, it was still a pretty stupid thing to
use such ammunition anywhere near our food chain, but in this case the
actual potential for heath effects is extremely minor, expecially when
compared to the threat posed by the radioactive metals described in
the accompanying arctile which could end up in our belt buckles,
cutlery and jacket zippers!!
Regards,
Ross.
