Register to speak to HRM council to urge a pesticide ban.

Last night HRM Council decided to hold a Committee of the Whole meeting to
allow the public to speak to the issue of pesticides. You are urged to
sign up right away before the sprayers take the spots.

The meeting will be this coming Tuesday, March 28, starting at 1:30 PM at
the HRM Council Chambers on Barrington St. Five minutes maximum length
per presentation.

Call the Municipal Clerk's office at 490-4212 between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM
to register to speak.

It is important that you please call right away as it appears that the
pesticide sprayers are signing up in numbers from early on. To many
councillors this is just a show of numbers. So they will count how many
spoke for each side and then vote for the side with the highest number.
The pesticide sprayers are claiming that the urge to ban cosmetic use
of pesticides is only coming from a very small, vocal "special
interest group." Many councillors appear to be swayed by that falsity, so
it is crucial that every one of you sign up to speak and also send in
letters and e-mail. And get everyone you know to do so as well.

If you cannot be there this Tuesday, ask council for an alternate time.

Use whatever form of presentation you are most comfortable with, personal
anecdotes, scientific studies, or anything else, but just be there and
make your voice heard. Council is influenced by every single person who
speaks, from children to seniors. You don't have to be an accomplished
speaker to be effective, but feel free to use every skill and idea you
can.

What we are asking for is for council to do precisely what was the
majority recommendation of their own advisory committee on this issue,
namely to enact a by-law to gradually phase-out cosmetic uses of
pesticides.
