Read in today's Chronicle Herald that some lawn maintenance companies are
threatening protracted legal battles if spraying lawns with pesticides and
other chemicals is banned in HRM.

Obviously, the lawn spray companies believe that the ban will cause a
significant loss of revenue. The entrepreneurs of these companies must
remember that they are in the lawn maintenance business.

Lawn maintenance involves many services, such as aerating, de-thatching,
liming, fertilizing, and not just spraying.

Two of the most beneficial of these services in my experience has to be
aerating and liming a lawn. Aerating involves using a roto-tiller like
machine that punches divot type holes in the lawn to reduce soil compacting
and improve absorption of nitrogen from the atmosphere. Liming is a real
plus where the soil tends to be acidic, in Industrial Cape Breton, at least.

So, my point is, a lawn spray ban should not be viewed as a loss of revenue,
but instead as an opportunity to market other money-making services.

And lastly, my experience has been that spraying reduces the overall
appearance of a lawn. I stopped spraying several years ago over concern
about my dogs and cats, and within a season various bushes, shrubs, and
small trees began to improve dramatically.

Sincerely,
