For your information, I have learned the following from the Forest Service
concerning the planned harvest of red spruce in Point Pleasant Park:

The brown spruce longhorned beetle (BSLB) Task Force has plans to cut only
the red spruce trees with definite signs of BSLB attack. These signs
include the following:
*	copious resin flow down the trunk,
*	ovo-spheroid emergence holes 4-5 mm in diam. in the bark (trees are
often attacked in more than 1 year).

Unattacked trees will remain in the park and will be inspected periodically.

Most of the red spruce trees in the park appear to be healthy and will not
be cut.

The Forest Service have also assessed the crown condition of 161 trees in 8
survey plots. Of the red spruce that were studied in these plots, here are
the results:
*	67% of them fell in crown conditions 1-3 which are considered
healthy (1 = no defoliation, 3 = less than 25% defoliation).
*	8% were classes 5-6  (5 = 51-75%, 6 = 76-90% defoliation),
*	25% were class 9 (dead).
*	83% of the dead trees had signs of beetle attack;
*	47% of the trees classed as healthy had been attacked by the beetle
(last summer, and possibly prior to that as well; trees may be attacked for
2-3 years in succession).

Before any cutting is to take place, the trees will be reassessed to confirm
definite signs of BSLB attack.
