THE GENETIC TAKEOVER

A new film by Karl Parent and Louise Vandelac, produced by the National
Film Board.

Admission: FREE

Where: Colonel Gray High School, Spring Park Road, Charlottetown

We are very fortunate that Karl Parent and Louise Vandelac will be present
for discussion and questions. They are vacationing on PEI and have
volunteered to spend an evening to show their widely acclaimed film and to
meet with people concerned about the GMO issue. Their film has already won
several awards and has been translated from the original French into many
other languages.

The Genetic Takeover
Abstract

Have we become unwitting guinea pigs for multinationals who blithely
disregard millions of years of evolution? In just a few short years,
genetically modified plants have become part of our daily diet and are
already found in 75% of processed foods. This revolution has occurred
without consumer awareness and without the knowledge of potential risks to
our health and to the environment. Many scientists and farmers vigorously
condemn the absence of independent, adequate testing. The Genetic Takeover
casts a sober look at a potentially explosive situation. In response to
consumer demands, many European and Asian countries have instituted
mandatory labelling of genetically modified foods. North America, however,
has been slow to react. In their relentless fight for profits, the
industrial giants seem willing to ignore basic safety rules. Can food
crops, a vital element of the collective wealth of this planet, remain at
the mercy of private interests?

Excerpt From "Statement to the Public by Jailed IMF/World Bank Protestors"

Our movement is a small part of a worldwide brotherhood and sisterhood
joining in solidarity with all the impoverished, oppressed, and progressive
people of earth. For us, breaking the law is not a frivolous gesture, but
rather a last-resort means of exposing the immense powers that we all face
when we attempt to create real, ethical change. We continue to draw
inspiration from the civil rights, anti-nuclear, anti-war, environmental
justice, labor rights, and anti-oppression movements. Who are we? We are
your sons and daughters, your sisters and brothers, your fathers, mothers,
grandfathers, and grandmothers. We are your co-workers, your fellow
parishioners and rabbis, your healers, your teachers, and your students.
We will continue to risk arrest, and if necessary resist with our very
lives, until we expose this world as one in which profits come before
people, so that a more just, humane, and free global society may take its
place.
