Hi,

Below is the text for the petition on commuter rail. As it stands now, CN is
still intending to rip up the tracks, after having failed to make a
satisfactory deal with HRM. Several hundred signatures have been collected
thus far. It would be great if people could print off a few petitions and
put them in stores, etc. and collect signatures. We would particularly like
more signatures from the Valley and Bedford Areas. Please return petitions
to the TRAX office at EAC or mail them to HRM, for Peter Kelly as he is
accepting them. It is really important that council sees that this is
something people support, epecially before and during the elections.

Thanks,

PETITION BELOW
********************************************************************

YES TO RAIL TRANSIT

Petition to: - Halifax Regional Council
                - Minister of Transport - Transport Canada
                - Canadian National Railway Company

Whereas: An extra railway line exists between Windsor Junction and
Halifax, and is owned by Canadian National Railway Company;
Whereas: A light rail transit service on this line would offer significant
public and environmental benefits, including decreased traffic, increased
mobility choices, and lower emissions of air pollution, and;
Whereas: Several studies have indicated the feasibility of a light rail
transit service along this line between Beaverbank, Sackville, Bedford and
Halifax;

We the undersigned, residents of and visitors to the Halifax Regional
Municipality, hereby request that:

- Halifax Regional Council seriously engage in negotiations with the CN
Rail Company to secure the long-term availability of the extra railway
track and prevent its removal;
- Halifax Regional Council utilize this extra line for public
transportation by implementing a light rail transit service between
Beaverbank and Halifax;
- The Minister of Transport provide for federal government cost-sharing of
the necessary infrastructure and equipment to implement a light rail
transit service on this extra line, and;
- CN Rail leave the track in place while negotiations and design phases
are ongoing.
