Dear Sust-Mar,

I sent a version of this note to Paul, who suggested I post it on Sust-Mar:

I just got back from two weeks in California. I spent time in Berkeley
(across
the bay from San Fransisco) where I was able to borrow a bicycle and
explore. In
Berkeley, almost ALL the buses have bike racks, and most routes leave on the

half hour. This is very helpful when one considers how steep Berkeley
is!!There
are many clearly marked bike lanes, and the fine for parking a car in them
is
VERY stiff! The Bay Area Rapid transit System (BART) also allows for bikes.
For
those who (horrors!) choose to drive into San Fransisco, those traveling by
carpool (3 or more per vehicle) are exempt from the bridge tolls during peak

hours.

In Pacific Grove, I rented a bicycle at a very reasonable rate and had the
pleasure of
peddling through Pebble Beach. Cars have to pay $8.00 US to get in, bikes
are
free! Again, there are clearly marked bike paths! Pacific Grove and Montery
also boosts an extensive bike and pedestrian only "Recreation Trail." One
can apparently put
bikes an the bus, but I had no need to due to the flat terrain and good
weather!

On a related topic, Pacific Grove and Montery also have few street lights
and low-energy traffic lights, so that at night one can really see the
stars. The fine for littering is $1000.00 U.S. Nobody Litters. There are
also very strict restrictions on development.

California may be a state of car driving energy hogs, but they do seem to be

ahead of us in several key areas. I suppose it can be argued that California
has
a climate more conducive to bicycling!
