MCDONOUGH CHALLENGES PRIME MINISTER TO COME CLEAN AND DELIVER HARBOUR
CLEANUP RESOURCES IN FEDERAL BUDGET

HALIFAX- Halifax MP Alexa McDonough today reiterated her demand that the
December 10th federal budget allocate the infrastructure funds required for
meaningful federal participation in the harbour cleanup.

"In one week, Prime Minister Chrétien must come clean with Nova Scotians and
deliver the long-promised resources to fund up to one-third of the harbour
cleanup costs. Liberal Cabinet members must set aside their internal
leadership squabbles and begin addressing the legitimate concerns of Nova
Scotians. They should not need a lesson on the political and economic
importance of Halifax harbour, given that federal commitment to fund
one-third of the costs was made almost two decades ago " said Ms. McDonough.

The Halifax MP again stressed the importance of keeping sewage treatment
publicly operated. Ms. McDonough is deeply concerned about the dangers of
allowing private companies with mixed track records to operate metro's
sewage treatment plants.

Following a meeting with HRM Mayor Peter Kelly, the Halifax MP once again
expressed her confidence in Halifax's water management team.

"Halifax has demonstrated the professional capability to operate these
treatment facilities and a solid track record of water management. This is a
historical opportunity and I am confident that Halifax's water management
team will rise to the challenge," said Ms. McDonough.

"In addition, a publicly operated sewage treatment plan would strengthen
HRM's case for demanding federal investment in this historical project,"
said Ms. McDonough.
