In case you are interested in attending a gathering to find out how you can help recover the numbers of the Piping Plover, but find the South Shore too far to travel, here is a chance for you at the northern end of the mainland. PLEASE JOIN US AT A GATHERING . . . WHERE: Mahoney's Beach public parking lot on the left when you come to the end of the gravel public road down from the highway and the beach is on your right. Nova Scotians are encouraged to share the beach by giving Piping Plovers room to raise their chicks. During the breeding season - from approximately May to August - volunteer guardians spend time at the posted boundaries to enhance public awareness of the plover's plight, encourage the public to please keep their pets on leashes and to avoid posted areas, or simply report a sighting. ABOUT THE NOVA SCOTIA COASTAL GUARDIAN PROGRAM The NSCGP is a program of the Nova Scotia Bird Society with financial support from the World Wildlife Fund and Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada through the Endangered Species Recovery Fund, and the Government of Canada's Habitat Stewardship Program for Species at Risk.
