MEDIA RELEASE COMMUNIQUE DE PRESSE

OTTAWA - Wednesday, April 3, 2002 - The Green Party of Canada heartily
congratulates and thanks Loblaws for their recent decision to discontinue
sales of chemical pesticides in their 440 garden centres by 2003.

"It is heartening to see a major Canadian retailer take such a progressive
step", said GPC Leader Chris Bradshaw. "Pesticides appear attractive for
home use only because the purchaser doesn't personally experience the
long-term health costs that 'cosmetic' pesticide use imposes on children
and animals in our communities." "Acre for acre, homeowners use more
pesticides than farmers, although less than golf course owners. And
homeowners have displayed far less knowledge of the way these products
work, especially on children and pets who are more exposed to the
application in their neighbourhoods," says GPC pesticide advisor, Peggy Land.

The Loblaws move reflects an important new reality: proven non-toxic
alternatives have been developed. This move fits with other marketing
decisions made by Loblaws in which they provide environmental alternatives
to their customer base, including organic foods.

The Green Party also encourages people to consider converting their lawns
to native wildflowers that are more resistant to the pests, fungi, and
'weeds' that are so often attracted to lawns.

"We look forward to other Canadian corporations following Loblaws' lead and
shifting their product lines to items facilitating long-term
sustainability," says Bradshaw.
