A message from Larry Hughes <lhughes2@dal.ca> to Sustainable Maritimes (sust-mar) subscribers.

Emera is the 'parent' company of NSPower. They held their most recent AGM
in Halifax on 24 April.

David Mann, president of Emera, made several interesting points:

- NSP will be installing a third wind turbine somewhere along the coast
later this year [Blandford is what has been suggested]. Possibly > 1
  MW.

- NSP wants to have a "portfolio" of energy options [they already do, but
this appeared to be lost on Mann]. They also want to be more "energy
efficient" -- how is unclear [see below].

- NSP wants to have third-party companies/organizations generate up to 2%
of its electricity. They are either "looking for" or are "negotiating
with" these parties [unclear from what Mann said at the time].

The 2% is the 'limit' that will be 'imposed' by the government in its
new energy act. This is in keeping with our belief that NSP wants to
avoid renewables at all costs [or live with them at minimal
  inconvenience].

- From my exchange with Mann during the shareholders' question session, it
is clear that NSP has no interest in co-generation unless 'policy' is in
place. In other words, they want to be forced into adopting co-gen, at
which point they can demand subsidies from the government.

It would appear the NSP can defy the laws of thermodynamics -- Tufts
Cove produces no waste heat according to Mann! The argument that this
would reduce GHG emissions and be a revenue stream for Emera was lost on
  him.

Larry.
