GET MOVING ON INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY!

Is there a child in your life? Now is the time to register his or her
school for the fourth annual International Walk to School Day, on Wednesday,
October 8th, 2003!

On this day, millions of parents, children, school teachers and community
leaders around the world will walk to school together to promote physical
activity, health, safety and a clean environment. Over 1,420 schools across
Canada participated in the 2002 event along with 28 countries around the
world. This year promises to be even bigger!

A school can register and get its free Registration Kit by visiting
www.goforgreen.ca/asrts/eform_e.aro or by contacting your Nova Scotia Active
& Safe Routes to School Coordinator, based out of the Ecology Action Centre,
at (902) 442-5055 or asrts@ecologyaction.ca. By registering and getting a
high participation rate on October 8, schools become eligible to win prizes
up to $500.00 or tree saplings to plant on school grounds.

All schools, no matter whether they have bussed or walking students, can
participate in this event. Schools with mostly walkers can benefit as they
will have no problem getting a high participation rate. Bussing schools can
get students to walk a lap or two around the school or field. As long as
students do some measure of walking or other active mode of transportation,
it counts!

International Walk to School Day is a component of the national Active &
Safe Routes to School Program, which encourages the use of active modes of
transportation to and from school. To find out more about getting your
school involved with Active & Safe Routes to School, check out the Nova
Scotia web site at www.ecologyaction.ca.
