FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cities & Environment Unit to Host "Big Ideas" Public Forum on Regional
Planning

The Cities & Environment Unit will host a public forum to elicit "Big Ideas"
from a panel of notable community spokespeople as well as diverse audience
participants. The "Big Ideas" session is poised to put bold propositions for
the region on the table and infuse citizens of the Halifax Regional
Municipality with vision and energy. With regional planning underway, this
is a critical moment in determining the future of the HRM.

The "Big Ideas" session provides a forum for discussion of bold
possibilities and aspirations for what this region should become. The Cities
& Environment Unit will propose possibilities for the region at several
scales. As well, a variety of well-known local figures will present their
visions for what the HRM should aspire to. Speakers include: Frank Palermo,
professor in the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, and director of the
Cities & Environment Unit; Kyle Shaw, founder and editor of The Coast; Peter
Doig, Chair of the Halifax Public Libraries Board; and Rebecca O'Brien, with
the TRAX project of the Ecology Action Centre.

The "Big Ideas" session will take place on Monday, November 3rd, 2003
starting at 7:00 pm, at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia auditorium (Bedford
Row Entrance). Admission is free. The evening will take the format of a
series of panel presentations, followed by audience questions, propositions
and debate. This event is intended to be the first in a series of public
discussions and debates about the future planning and design of the HRM.

Based in the Faculty of Architecture and Planning at Dalhousie University,
the Cities & Environment Unit is a not-for-profit applied research and
community planning action group. Under the direction of Frank Palermo, the
Cities & Environment Unit team consists of five full time planners, graduate
students and administrative staff. Through local, regional and international
initiatives, the Unit pursues projects related to community development and
design.
