Foundations in Herbal Medicine  -  Summer/Fall  2004

? This herbal course offers a unique opportunity to develop your skills
and knowledge about the plant medicine that grows throughout Nova
Scotia.
?  During this course, we focus on accurate plant identification, herbal
therapeutics and medicine making with local plants - from gardens and
the wild.
?  This is a practical course with emphasis on learning by doing -
through fieldwork, classroom sessions, practical assignments and
supervised research.
?  Foundations in Herbal Medicine is suitable for intermediate and
beginner herbal studies students. Some basic knowledge of herbs is
recommended.

The purpose of this herbal studies course is to provide the herbal
student with the foundation tools and experience to identify wild and
cultivated medicinal plants, know the therapeutic actions of the plants,
develop skills in making quality herbal medicine and learn how to use
plant medicine wisely. A holistic framework and participatory learning
environment make this course an engaging experience.

Foundations in Herbal Medicine =96 Summer 2004 blends theory and practica=
l
hands-on learning as well as scientific and traditional approaches to
practicing herbal medicine.
The topic areas to be addressed include:
? Basic field botany for herbalists
? Tools and processes for plant identification
? Ethical wild gathering and plant harvesting practices
? Materia medica of the local plants studied
? Ways of making herbal preparations
? Creating a herbarium for plant study
Students will develop a complete herbal pharmacy of botanical medicine
made during the course and possess the knowledge for safe and effective
usage of these preparations.

Time commitment for the Foundations Summer/Fall 2004 course:
? Students will attend five intensive full weekend sessions which
include both classroom style teaching and =93in the field=94 sessions  - =
the
weekends will take place at regular intervals from June through October
2004.
? Personal time of at least 5 hours per week needs to be set aside for
reading, research and practical homework assignments
? Each student will determine their personal learning objectives with
the course instructor and develop an individual plant study research
project.

The instructor for the course is Danette Steele, BA, MA, RH, Medical
Herbalist. Danette is a skilled teacher and herbal practitioner. She has
consciously been studying and working with medicinal plants and people
since 1987.

The cost for the course is $725.00.  A payment plan is available =96 see
registration form.
