U.S. LAW EXTENDS TO NOVA SCOTIA DATABASES

HALIFAX -
The Nova Scotia government is reviewing whether to tighten up its freedom of information laws.

There's concern the U.S. Patriot Act allows the American government to access private information about Canadians.

The law, which is meant to combat terrorism, requires the Canadian subsidiaries
of U.S. companies to open their databases to American authorities.

NDP Leader Darrell Dexter says three Nova Scotia agencies use American companies to keep their records.

"If you're an owner of a motor vehicle or if you happen to be a recipient of community services or in the civil servant payroll, information about you could be transmitted to the U.S. government for the purpose, one assumes, of building profiles."

Dexter says the Conservative government must introduce new legislation that prevents companies it hires from releasing information to any foreign government.

The B.C. government has already introduced a law to protect its citizens.
