The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is Nova Scotia's most
established non-profit, community environmental organization.
Our activities include, but are not limited to, transportation,
marine, wilderness, urban issues, sustainable food production,
alternative energy, salt marsh restoration, and coastal land
protection and public access.
The Transportation Issues Committee is seeking an outgoing,
organized and goal-oriented person to fill the position of
Vehicle Scrappage Project Coordinator.
The vehicle scrappage program is designed to improve air
quality by encouraging owners of pre-1994, higher polluting
vehicles to scrap their vehicles in favour of cleaner forms
of transportation. An incentive program is part of the project
and will motivate owners to retire their vehicles in favor of
alternatives, including public transit, cycling, walking, car
pooling. Another component of the program is to educate the
public on the environmental, social, and health impacts of car
emissions.
The Project Coordinator is responsible for implementing and
managing the vehicle scrappage program within the greater
Halifax Regional Municipality.
Specific duties are to:
- Negotiate with partners and finalize the incentive program.
- Develop and implement communications campaigns.
- Meet project goals of retiring 500 cars per year for two years.
- Ensure appropriate practices of removal and disposal of early
retired vehicles.
- Manage the program within a defined budget.
- Develop contacts and work with existing scrappage programs
elsewhere in the country.
- Facilitate networking and support between other related programs
(both internal and external to EAC).
- Attend monthly Transportation Committee meetings.
- Contribute to and work within the EAC organization.
Skills Required
- University degree in business, marketing or environmental science.
- Marketing, communications, advertising experience.
- Solid entrepreneurial skills.
- Financial skills and experience managing a budget.
- Project management experience.
- Strong communication skills (listening, oral, written); ability to
write for a variety of audiences.
- Planning and organization skills (manage priorities, complete
action plans, work independently with minimal supervision).
- Personal skills (team oriented, energetic, motivated, outgoing,
friendly, conscientious).
- Creativity and ability to take initiative.
Skills Desired
- Ability to think laterally and see opportunities for integration
between
this project and the TRAX program.
- Environmentally concerned with knowledge of environmental issues.
- Familiar with the local community and local agencies.
- Experience working or volunteering for a non-profit group.
The position will begin January 3, 2005 and the contract
continues until March 2007.
Salary: $17/hour; 35 hours per week.
