Kyoto is Business Friendly

(Ottawa) Today Canadian businesses join the world community in celebrating the Kyoto Protocol.

Business and environmental organizations held a news conference to outline ways in which the Kyoto Protocol will lead to greater business opportunities. The Protocol came into force Wednesday, February 16th 2005, a culmination of 15 years of international negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions to curb global climate change.

According to Rob McMonagle, Executive Director of the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA), new energy technologies like solar will be given a tremendous boost by the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol. "Solar will be creating new jobs in every part of Canada - we estimate that there could be 60,000 solar jobs in Canada by 2025. Canadian solar companies now have a tremendous opportunity to sell their products and services around the world."

"Most Canadians support Kyoto and don't like living through smog alert days - especially in the middle of winter," says EnviroCentre's Dana Silk. "Improving the energy efficiency of their homes is a painless way for many families to protect their kids and the environment while getting better returns on their investment than most RRSPs."

"For Canada to meet its Kyoto targets, it will rely on emissions reductions at home, and purchases of emission credits abroad. We see a tremendous opportunity to bridge the gap between those who will generate these credits, and those who will need to buy them", said Diana Smallridge of ER Reservoir, a carbon credits fund manager.

"We're delighted to say that Kyoto is the driver which will launch us into a new era of green economic growth" said Martin von Mirbach, National Conservation Director, Sierra Club of Canada. "It's going to help encourage people to look at alternatives, and be more energy efficient. Kyoto is good for business, good for the planet and good for the people of Canada."
