http://www.ecologyaction.ca

Date posted to GoodWork: Apr 28, 2005
Application deadline: May 10, 2005
Start date: May / ASAP
Location: Halifax NS, Canada

Tidal Barriers Outreach Coordinator

The Ecology Action Centre is the oldest environmental
organization in Nova Scotia and has been in existence
since 1971. Currently, the Ecology Action Centre has
750 members, 150 active volunteers and seven issue
committees, focusing on transportation, wilderness
preservation and forestry, coastal issues, urban planning,
renewable energy, agriculture and food, and marine
conservation. Ecology Action Centre's mission is to
encourage a society in Nova Scotia which respects and
protects nature and also provides environmentally and
economically sustainable jobs for its citizens.

The Ecology Action Centre's tidal barriers work aims
to increase public awareness about the effects of tidal
restrictions on salt marshes and fish passage between ocean
and freshwater environments. This project will provide
information and facilitate collaboration around the impacts
of tidal barriers on essential estuarine and tidal river fish
habitats in the inner Bay of Fundy. The focus of this project
is raising awareness around the threats that tidal barriers
pose to the recovery of endangered inner Bay of Fundy
Atlantic Salmon and other associated anadromous /
diadromous fish populations, and the importance of
mitigating or removing barriers to tidal flow and fish
passage. We will work closely with existing watershed
stewardship organizations and provincial and federal
regulatory agencies to improve understanding and
stewardship efforts to recover salmon and other migratory
species' rivers in the inner Bay of Fundy.

Overall responsibilities:

The outreach coordinator will prepare a series of outreach
materials (tabloid, brochures, and posters) and make
presentations to interested groups throughout the inner Bay
of Fundy Watershed. The staff person will also target
individual rivers within the inner Bay of Fundy watershed
for more intensive outreach. In these areas the individual
will build partnerships and conduct focused education,
stewardship, and restoration planning activities about the
threats posed by tidal barriers to migratory fish populations.
Fact sheets will be produced about each river system and
its tidal barriers to be used as a basis for developing
restoration plans for removal of tidal barriers at these sites.

The outreach coordinator will work with the Coastal Issues
coordinator at the Ecology Action Centre in Halifax.

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Research: in-house and web-based research; interviews
2. Produce and deliver outreach materials, resource
documents, and fact sheets
3. Organize workshops, meetings and presentations
4. Assist with other coastal campaign activities as needed
