Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

About the film:
Although originally planned as a documentary about democracy coming to Haiti
with the election of Jean-Bertrand Aristide in December 1990, during the
final editing of "Haiti: Harvest of Hope" in September of 1991, Haiti was
struck by yet another brutal military coup. The first version came to a
sudden halt. Director Kevin Pina returned to Haiti and spent the next three
weeks chronicling the brutality of Haiti's US-backed military leaders.
"Haiti: The Betrayal of Democracy" takes a close look at the events leading
up to the coup of Aristide in February of 2004, as well as the immediate
aftermath. A particular focus of the film is the surprising distortion of
the events which were taking place in Haiti during this period by the
mainstream media, from CBC to Reuters. Both films root their focus upon the
poor majority of Haiti, who continue to struggle for basic human rights,
ecomonic justice, and democracy amongst a brutal regime and theirUS, French,
and Canadian backers.
