The following directory of Cumberland County businesses and businessmen for Amherst, Oxford, Parrsborro, Springhill, and Wallace is extracted from McAlpine's Maritime and Newfoundland gazetteer... (Saint John, 1898). This publication has been reproduced as CIHM Microfiche A00533. It mainly consists of advertising material and some brief comments on the various communities (e.g. size, industries).
Two examples of Cumberland County communities give a sense of the type of information this directory typically provides:
"A post and farming settlement in Cumberland Co., 6 miles from Westchester Station, 18 miles from Oxford, 22 miles from Pugwash; nearest money order office and banks, Oxford; nearest port of entry, Pugwash; nearest express and telegraph, Westchester Station; contains 1 hotel, N.S. telephone, 1 church; pop. 200"
"A post-office and railway station on the I.C.R. in Cumberland Co., 6 miles from Westchester, 16 miles from Oxford, 16 miles from Pugwash; nearest money order office and banks, Oxford; nearest port of entry, Pugwash; nearest telephone, Westchester; contains 3 stores, Can. Express, W. U. Telegraph; 1 church; pop. 75"
It appears that the list of businesses is not comprehensive; rather it seems to focus on paid advertisers. Only personal names have been included in this list; incorporated companies are not included.
