ABOUT THE LIST

The modem-moms list had its start when Theresa Henry-Smith sent a note to
Today's Parent magazine, giving her email address and saying that she was
interested in contacting other mothers who had online access. The note
appeared in the November 94 issue of Today's Parent. The initial list of
"Modem Moms" was manually maintained by Theresa for a while, but it grew
to the point where a mailing list made more sense. Chebucto Community Net
began hosting the modem-moms list in January 95.

Modem-moms is a mailing list where parents, both moms and dads, can talk
about children and parenting in a friendly and casual atmosphere. Parents
with kids of any age are welcome; although at the moment many of the
listmembers are parents of young children.

After the initial period of "lurking" (see the list policy below)
newcomers to the list are invited to introduce themselves by sending a
note to modem-moms. You can mention where you live, how many children you
have, their names and ages, what you do, and so on. Of course, this is
optional, but it's nice to know a little about the others in the group.

MODEM-MOMS LIST POLICY

The atmosphere of modem-moms to date has been friendly and considerate,
and we'd like to keep it that way. Your messages should be polite and
respectful of other's viewpoints, even if you disagree with someone else's
opinions. Acrimonious debates, of the type often seen in Usenet
newsgroups, are not welcome here, since they tend to destroy the community
atmosphere of the mailing list.

Keep the topics of your posts close to the subject of children, families
and parenting, preferably with relevance to the your personal situation.
Since we're a chatty group, the discussion does sometimes get off-track,
but it should remain centred on family-related topics.

New members should lurk for a while (i.e. read but not send messages) for
one to two weeks, to get a feel for appropriate topics of discussion and
appropriate tone.

You are expected to follow general netiquette guidelines. These guidelines
will be emailed to new members, with the subject line "General Netiquette
Guidelines", and also posted to the list once a month as a reminder.

If the list owner feels that a discussion is getting out of hand or
seriously out of line with the list policy guidelines, she will call a
temporary halt to the discussion topic. List members are expected to
cooperate with this request.

List traffic varies a lot, but it can be as much as 40 messages a day
during busy periods, so please keep up with your email. Save or delete
the messages in your incoming mail box. If your email bounces for more
than two days, you will be unsubscribed from the list. You are welcome to
re-subscribe after you get your mailbox cleaned up.

ADMINISTRATIVE INFO:

The modem-moms list is available in both a regular format and a digest
format. If you are currently subscribed to the regular format and want to
switch to the digest format, you should unsubscribe from the regular
list and subscribe to the digest format (see instructions below). Don't
subscribe to both formats unless you like getting all your messages
twice!

*** To subscribe to the regular version of the list:

Email a message to majordomo@chebucto.ns.ca with the message
       subscribe modem-moms
in the body of the message.

If you subscribe to the regular version, you will receive messages as
they are sent to the list.

*** To unsubscribe from the regular version of list:

Email a message to majordomo@chebucto.ns.ca with the message
       unsubscribe modem-moms
in the body of the message.

*** To subscribe to the digest version of the list:

Email a message to majordomo@chebucto.ns.ca with the message
      subscribe modem-moms-digest
in the body of the message.

If you subscribe to the digest version, each day's messages to
modem-moms will be collected and sent to you as one message once a
day. This is useful if you get a lot of email, as it keeps the
   modem-moms mail collected together.

*** To unsubscribe from the digest version of the list:

Email a message to majordomo@chebucto.ns.ca with the message
       unsubscribe modem-moms-digest
in the body of the message.

*** How to Send Messages to the Other Modem-moms:

   Email your message to
      modem-moms@chebucto.ns.ca

This applies even if you are subscribed to the digest format. Do NOT
   send messages to modem-moms-digest.

*** If You Have Problems:

   Email to modem-moms-owner@chebucto.ns.ca.

PLEASE NOTE: If email to your address bounces for more than two days,
you will be unsubscribed from the list by the list owner. If you are
not sure whether you have been unsubscribed or not, email to
modem-moms-owner@chebucto.ns.ca and ask.

Hope you enjoy the list!
