Again - biomass and pulp and paper do not necessarily target old growth sta=
nds whereas this direction will. Not that I like the idea of young stands =
being cut down either but the old growth stands are especially valuable as =
banks for biodiversity. =20

Hi Mary=2C all others=3B
today=2C our forestry industry is in the "pulp-and-paper era=2C" to quot=
e from the "Report of the Steering Panel Phase II=2C Natural Resources Stra=
tegy" released in April of this year. (For better or worse=2C it may be in =
the cusp of the "biomass era=2C" when we don't produce anything material fr=
om our forests=2C but just burn them to make electricity.)
I cannot see how replacing other building materials with wood in the ver=
y=2C very few federal buildings being built today can change the demand for=
wood products. The feds lease most of their office buildings=2C and the fi=
re prevention regulations prevent wood's use elsewhere.
It seems to me that the "wood first" bill is just a token effort to supp=
ort the Canadian forest products industry. But I am waiting to hear from th=
e experts...

the "wood first" act - Bill C-429 has already gone through it's first readi=
ng and through committee and looks like it may become law very soon:=20
=20
It mandates government to prefer wood for any and all projects:
=20
"amend the Department of Public Works and Government Services Act (use of w=
ood) by adding the following after subsection (1):
(1.1) Despite subsection (1)=2C before soliciting bids for the construction=
=2C maintenance or repair of public works=2C federal immovables and federa=
l real property=2C the Minister shall give preference to the concept that p=
romotes the use of wood=2C while taking into account the cost and greenhous=
e gas emissions."
=20
This started in BC where it is now law and is beginning to be adopted and/o=
r looked at by other jurisdictions.
=20
Can this be good - interested in other people's opinions. I just feel our =
forests are being threatened on every level.
