I met Merritt as a new graduate student at McGill in 1964 when he was
still in the Biology Dept there; I knew of him also from my Dad who
said he was a frequent visitor as a young boy at my Grandparents home
in Wolfville. I think I have bought all of the books he has written,
some as multiple copies to give to aspiring naturalists. My favourite
is The Old Place. He will indeed be missed, but will still inspire.

I have especially admired and enjoyed the comprehensiveness of
Merritt?s natural history writings. After a shameful life of not
knowing my birds very well, I recently started a list. Two days ago,
the day Merritt passed away, a yellow breasted chat spent 30 mins or
so by a Virginia creeper covered fence in my backyard in Halifax (Bob
M. confirmed the ID from a photo). It was a nice addition to my list
and a nice way to remember Merritt.
