Hi,

As Randy points out, most birds are protected by Federal legislation. Non-raptors fall under the Migratory Birds Convention Act a copy of which can be found at the following Government of Canada web site:
http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/M-7.01/

For the purposes of the act, "migratory bird" means a migratory bird referred to in the Convention, and includes the sperm, eggs, embryos, tissue cultures and parts of the bird.

There are also aboriginal rights that must be considered.

The relevant text reads:
Except as authorized by the regulations, no person shall, without lawful excuse,
(a) be in possession of a migratory bird or nest; or
(b) buy, sell, exchange or give a migratory bird or nest or make it the subject of a commercial transaction.

Legislation for raptors (eagle, osprey, falcons, hawks, and owls) falls under the Nova Scotia Wildlife act which can be viewed here:
http://nslegislature.ca/legc/statutes/wildlife.htm

The relevant text reads: "Except with a permit issued by the Minister, no person shall take, hunt or kill or attempt to take, hunt or kill or possess any ..."

Paul's link to harvesting/hunting regulations can get you to the NS legislation but the vast majority of bird species are federally protected so the link above is more direct.

And no, I'm not a lawyer. Ha ha

All the best,

Lance

It's easier to answer, "What isn't protected?"

European Starling
House Sparrow
American Crow
Rock Pigeon

That's off the top of my head.

What other birds besides the Bald Eagle are legally fully protected from hunting or collecting here in Nova Scotia or where might I find this information. Have googled 'Protected Birds Of Nova Scotia' but it is somewhat unclear from what I have read.
