Gayle=2C thanks for the question and education re Facebook=2C about which I=
am totally ignorant (and intend to continue that ignorance). I use "peep"=
to refer to unspecified small shorebirds=2C i.e.=2C sandpipers and plovers=
up to the sizes of semipalmated plovers and white-rumped or Baird's sandpi=
pers. It's just a convenient word for flocks of possibly mixed species of s=
horebirds smaller than dowitchers or pectoral sandpipers or black-bellied p=
lovers etc.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

Hello Jim=2C

I always enjoy read your interesting nature & birding updates on the Nature=
NS site=2C but=2C is the term 'Peeps' an acronym for a certain species of b=
irds?

More recently (& maybe you were aware=2C anyway)=2C the term 'peeps' now=2C=
also refers to Facebook members & their friends.=20

I know=2C 'the times=2C they are 'a changin'...

Thanks Jim!

JULY 24=2C 2011 - High tide this morning was 8:03 a.m.=2C according to =20
Blomidon Nat. Soc. calendar. As the tide ebbed from 9:45 to 10:45 =20
a.m. Pat Hawes and I walked the east end of Evangeline Beach to look =20
for shorebirds/peeps=2C from the break in the woods that formerly was a =20
boat launch site to the east end of the woods=2C well west of The =20
Guzzle at the east end (northeasterly point of Grand Pre and Long =20
Island).

Because today's high tide was a very low high (only 8.7 metres of =20
amplitude)=2C the tide was quite far out when we arrived=2C and =20
immediately we saw flying flocks of peeps. As usual=2C nearly all the =20
flocks were flying from the east (from where?) toward the west=2C =20
although some of the flocks turned back toward the east in flight =20
before reversing and heading east again. Such makes it impossible to =20
keep track of how many total birds there are and what individual =20
flocks are doing=2C especially when they land among a feeding flock =20
along the shore.

Today there was no accumulation of peeps on the shore at the east end =20
of the beach. Rather=2C the early flocks started landing at the =20
water's edge at and just east of Jean Merk's home=2C and then the =20
feeding flocks attracted later-arriving flying flocks from the east.

I can only guess at the total number of peeps seen today=2C probably at =20
least 3000 -- 1500 were feeding in that spot mentioned above=2C but =20
flocks were always coming and going from there (to where? mostly to =20
the west? or across to Starr's Point?).

We also saw 4 bald eagles (2 adults and 2 dark immatures -- quite =20
possibly a family?)=2C plus several gulls and cormorants. No falcons =20
seen=2C but we bet there are some in the area=2C both merlins and =20
peregrines.
