I presume the name comes from the ovipositor and the accompanying sheath of
the female.

This particular one is *Urocerus cressoni*. (I am not aware of any common
names for these, hence the scientific names.  Apparently most people do not
pay any attention to them).  The larvae feed on conifers - spruce, fir and
pine.

Nathan Schiff's publication on North American siricids includes some superb
photos about pp. 67-70.
