Didn't see 'Vogel' (Gallinule) but did see an American Coot today, around noon with both Widgeons & Mallards, when I left a large amount of salad greens, chopped salmon, corn meal, niger, mixed bird seed & raw hulled sunflower seeds in the reeds right next to the gravel area by the open water at the drainage ditch. The Coot went right for the offerings but the Widgeons & Ducks were not very interested. Hope the Coot left some & that the Gallinule found the goodies too, before the storm!

Nick and I went to Red Bridge pond today at around 4:30 to see whether or not Vogel, the Common Gallinule was around.  Vogel is dutch for bird.

Vogel was swimming and looking for food with a couple of mallards.  I dropped some more cracked corn all around the open water/reeds so that when Vogel looks around the edges, there will be corn there.  The Mallards were also delighted to have cracked corn just before dark.

So folks keep feed the bird leafy greens and protein such as chopped smelts, salmon or boiled eggs.  I use chopped smelts because to my mind, it may resemble small snails and thus attract Vogel's attention.  By the way, Cathy Murrant, one of our provinces best birders, suggested spinach as it is more nutritious then lettuce.  Worth a try and we shall keep an eye on it for the next few days to see how the ice forces it closer to shore so it can be captured and taken to either Hope for Wildlife or Cobequid Animal Rehab.
