*** THIS WEEK'S SKY AT A GLANCE
*
Some events in the changing sky for Feb 26 - March 3

There is an action-packed week ahead. Let's hope for some clear-sky nights.

On Sunday, Feb. 26, the crecent *MOON *[Lune] pairs with Jupiter and it's
Venus's turn to be the spectator. On Monday, Feb. 27, see the six brightest
night objects at once. The last few days of February and the first few days
of March offer us a rare chance to see at least a half dozen of the night
sky's brightest objects simultaneously, 30 to 60 minutes after sunset. In
order of brightness, they are the MOON, VENUS, JUPITER, the star SIRIUS,
MARS and MERCURY.

On Wednesday, Feb. 29, the MOON will go into its first quarter phase,
meaning that it will rise at noon and set at midnight.

On Saturday, Feb. 25, the *SUN *[Soleil] rose at 7:09 a.m. and will set at
6:04 p.m. On Saturday, Mar. 3, it will rise at 6:57 a.m. and set at 6:14
p.m.*

**This Week's Planet Roundup

**MERCURY *[Mercure], about magnitude -1.0, is emerging into its best
evening apparition of 2012. As the after-glow of sunset fades in the west,
look for Mercury far to the lower right of bright Venus.

*VENUS *[V=E9nus] and *JUPITER*, at magnitude -4.2 and -2.2, respectively,
are the two bright "Evening Stars" shining in the southwest to west during
and after dusk. Venus is the brighter, lower one. Watch Jupiter closing in
on it by one degree every day. The gap between them narrows from 17 degrees
to 10 degrees this week. These are the two brightest celestial objects
after the Sun and the Moon.

*MARS*, about magnitude -1.2, is nearing its March 3rd opposition. It rises
bright fire-orange in the east during twilight and dominates the eastern
sky after dark. Mars shines highest in the south after 1 a.m.

*SATURN *[Saturne], at magnitude +0.5, rises in the east around 11 p.m. and
shines brightest in the south around 4 a.m. The star *SPICA*, a little
fainter at magnitude +1.0, and bluer, is 7 degrees to its right or upper
right. Saturn's rings are tilted a generous 15 degrees from our line of
sight, the most open the rings have appeared since 2007; They can be
clearly observed with a birding scope on clear nights.*
