Hi Jim & All, June 7, 2012
Many years ago I saw a Pileated feeding on the ground at the base of =
a stunted pear (apple ?) tree at the Research Station that was partly =
heaved out of the ground by frost action. It would do something (tap on =
an exposed root ?) then feed for a while and then repeat the process. =
After it flew off I went to the tree and duplicated whatever the bird =
did as best I could and small ants swarmed out of a cavity at the base =
of the tree.

So I concluded that these small ants had been the attraction.

Yt, DW, Kentville

JUNE 7, 2012 - On Beckwith Ave. close to home in Wolfville, I again =
encountered a male pileated woodpecker on the ground, working the edge =
of a lawn along the curb and pecking at the ground; I'm guessing it was =
foraging on ants that were at the ground surface there; the woodpecker =
was quite approachable by me in my car. This has happened twice for me =
in Wolfville in the past week, and at least three other people have =
mentioned the same kind of sighting, all in Wolfville. Also today my =
dentist, Andy Nette, told me about an active pileated woodpecker nest in =
a poplar? along Kent Avenue in Wolfville (I will check this out and =
report on it later).
