Dusan used the term "cyanophyte" (Cyanophyta) for "blue-green algae"
-- but now everyone calls all of the blue-greens Cyanobacteria, "blue-
green bacteria", because they are non-nuclear like other bacteria and
therefore not related to other algae with nuclei, like the greens,
browns, reds, yellow-greens, diatoms, dinoflagellates, et al.

Most of the blue-green bacteria show a blue-green colouration, and
many are associated with toxins, as Dusan hinted -- thus care should
be taken about exposure to them when encountered. Also many blue-
greens are microscopic and may not be obvious to the naked eye.

Blue-greens have been in the news recently because of blooms of them
in various watersheds of Yarmouth and Digby Counties in areas of
concentrated mink farms. I don't think any smoking gun has been
found yet, but the coincidence of blooms with the growing mink
industry raise lots of questions about proper methods of storage and
composting for mink food and wastes. Currently, and for a long time,
the N.S. government (Environment and Agriculture Departments) are
working on legislated regulations on this versus current guidelines.

Cheers? from Jim in Wolfville
