Hi all:
=20
Weather on Brier Island turned out to be much better than predicted and def=
initely better than that on the mainland. Friday afternoon and evening it =
was wet. Saturday morning was foggy with it being wet off and on until aro=
und noon. It sprinkled a bit on the pelagic and then it cleared off with s=
unshine and clear weather other than a fog bank that kept creeping in every=
now and then and interfered with seeing and getting an id on some birds. =
Sunday morning brought more heavy fog=2C which did not lift until late in t=
he morning. It should be noted that it was great birding on the pelagic Fri=
day with thousands of seabirds. Five jaegers were seen of which one was a =
parasitic and four were pomarine. On the trip we had three gentlemen from =
Fur and Feathers from Calgary=2C AB and a couple from Ontario. The guys fr=
om Fur & Feather went on the pelagic both on Friday and Saturday. No one s=
howed up from the Nova Scotia Bird Society other than Eric and Anne Mills w=
ho we birded with for awhile on Sunday. I suspect that the weather changed=
the plans for many as it did not look good at all for the weekend. Birds =
were hard to come by on land. Thank you Eric for your finds and additions =
and help in locating birds. Thank you also to Penny Graham for her kind as=
sistance with both the birds and great views of two right whales of which o=
nly 450 exist in the world. We also had a wonderful experience with at lea=
st 24 white-sided dolphins=2C which performed nicely and jumped out of the =
water many times. Results overall were probably the lowest that I've had o=
n this trip in 28 years. The group count for species if I've not missed an=
ything was only 71 with an unknown flycatcher=2C likely a least or alder an=
d an unknown juvenile sparrow=2C which might have been a juvenile chipping.=
That would bring the count up to 73 species. I myself saw only 62 specie=
s and Pat and I for the entire weekend traveling to and from Brier Island b=
ack home only logged 70 species. There was very little warbler movement wi=
th only seven species on the island. =20
