DEC. 4, 2012 - This morning a raptor flew through our yard extremely
low to the ground through some brush and trees right below our
kitchen window. It was dark gray or brownish-gray on its dorsal (top
in flight) parts from head to wings & back and tail. The wings and
tail were long, and I strongly suspect it was a large sharp-shinned
hawk. But it kept going and my sighting was very brief.

At noon I took a drive from Wolfville to Canning area. I checked
Canard Pond, where water and/or ice levels were very very low and no
waterbirds. Saxon Street Pond also held no waterfowl. In Canning 4
mallards (3m,1f/imm) were in the Habitant River. The same river held
no waterfowl nw. of the Canning Aboiteau. There were lots of puddle
ducks in the river downstream from the aboiteau, but I didn't scope
them at all. I saw a total of about 10 bald eagles (5 along M. Dyke
Rd. north of Canard St.) and 3 red-tailed hawks.

There was an impressive aggregation of 1000+ starlings at and near
Jawbone Corner (hwys. 358/341 jct.), and several hundreds of herring
gulls s. of Saxon St. along hwy. 358.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
