Hi all,

Coincidentally, I was thinking about bird guides just before this thread =
appeared. I'd returned from catching a glance of a duck in flight, and =
needed a quick reminder of which one it was.

I'm firmly in the Sibley camp, and have the others on hand for further =
reference (I reckon the National Wildlife Federation is one of the =
better photo guides). But the one I turned to, for just the basic, =
at-a-glance patterns, was a first edition of Peterson's (1934), with the =
flying ducks all laid out on the same plates, without a lot of clutter =
or details that won't show up at 500 metres anyway.

Not that I'm suggesting the old Peterson is the one to have -- but it'd =
be cool to see someone come out with a comprehensive guide that stuck to =
the same simple principles that even the Peterson series itself drifted =
away from.

Cheers,
Andy
