The short answer is that fall-migrant Red-necked Phalaropes traditionally =
concentrated by the
hundreds of thousands in the Passamaquoddy Bay / Eastport Passage area of =
the northern
Bay of Fundy entrance, while Red Phalaropes tended to dominate off Brier I=
sland. Late in the
1980s the numbers of Red-necks fell catastrophically for unknown reasons a=
nd the
separation became less clear. That situation persisted into the past few y=
ears.

There is a discussion of this in The Birds of Brier Island, and at UNB Rob=
in Hunnewell has
been working on the distribution of the two species (Ph.D research probabl=
y now finished but
I haven't seen it yet). So more info may be available soon.
